Create a Portfolio

This guide walks you through creating a new portfolio in Point.

Permissions Required

You need the Portfolio Manager or Administrator role to create portfolios. If you don't see the Create option, contact your administrator.


Step 1: Open the Create Portfolio Form

  1. Click Portfolios in the left navigation
  2. Click the + Create New button (top right of the portfolio list)
  3. The Create Portfolio form will open

Step 2: Enter Basic Details

Choosing a Portfolio Type

  • Simple — the portfolio will hold securities directly. Choose this for most portfolios.
  • Composite — the portfolio will aggregate other portfolios. Choose this for consolidated views (e.g., a client's total wealth view).

Step 3: Configure Settings (Optional)

Step 4: Save the Portfolio

  1. Review all the details you've entered
  2. Click Save Portfolio
  3. The portfolio will appear in the portfolio list immediately
Next Steps After Creating a Portfolio

After creating a portfolio, you'll typically want to:

  1. Add securities (positions) via the Securities module
  2. Import historical transactions
  3. Verify the valuation is calculating correctly in Data Quality

Creating a Composite Portfolio

If you selected Composite as the portfolio type:

  1. After saving, open the portfolio detail view
  2. Go to the Sub-Portfolios tab
  3. Click Add Portfolio to add existing portfolios as components
  4. The composite portfolio's total value will automatically sum the component portfolios
