Security Lookthroughs

Security Lookthroughs allow Point to "look through" a fund or collective investment vehicle to see its underlying holdings. This is essential for accurate asset allocation analysis and risk reporting.

What is a Look-Through?

When a portfolio holds a fund (e.g., a UCITS equity fund), the portfolio's asset allocation report would simply show "Fund" as an asset class — which is not very useful. A look-through tells Point what the fund actually holds, so the underlying exposure can be attributed correctly.

Without look-through:

Portfolio
└── Global Equity Fund (100%)
└── [Unknown underlying holdings]

With look-through:

Portfolio
└── Global Equity Fund (100%)
├── Apple Inc (5.2%)
├── Microsoft Corp (4.8%)
├── Amazon.com Inc (3.9%)
└── ... (other holdings)

Viewing Look-Throughs

  1. Go to Securities → Security Lookthroughs
  2. Search for the fund security
  3. Click on the fund to see its current look-through composition

The look-through view shows:

  • Each underlying security and its weight in the fund
  • The effective date of the look-through data
  • The data source (manual entry or automated feed)

Creating a Look-Through

Manual Entry

  1. Go to Securities → Security Lookthroughs
  2. Click + Add Look-Through
  3. Search for and select the fund security
  4. Set the Effective Date (the date this composition applies from)
  5. Add each underlying holding:
    • Search for the security
    • Enter the weight (as a percentage)
  6. Ensure the weights sum to 100%
  7. Click Save Look-Through
Weights Must Sum to 100%

Point will warn you if the weights don't sum to 100%. Small rounding differences (e.g., 99.98%) are acceptable, but significant gaps indicate missing holdings.

Importing Look-Throughs

For funds with many holdings, use the bulk import:

  1. Click Import Look-Throughs
  2. Download the Excel template
  3. Fill in the fund ISIN, effective date, and underlying holdings with weights
  4. Upload the completed file
  5. Review the preview and click Confirm Import

Look-Through History

Point maintains a history of look-through compositions over time. When you add a new look-through with a new effective date, the previous composition is retained for historical reporting.

This means that if you run a report for 31 December last year, Point will use the look-through composition that was in effect on that date — not today's composition.

Automated Look-Through Feeds

If your organisation has a data feed from a fund administrator or market data provider, Point can automatically update look-throughs when new data is received. Contact your administrator or support@pointgroup.io to configure automated feeds.

Look-Through in Reports

When generating reports, you can choose whether to apply look-throughs:

  • With Look-Through — shows the underlying economic exposure (recommended for asset allocation reports)
  • Without Look-Through — shows the fund as a single line item (useful for legal/regulatory reporting)
